Research Focus and Research Trend in Photonic Chip

Abstract:

[Objective] Driven by problem- and application-oriented research, this paper analyzes the global competition situation, priority areas and main development trends in the photonic chip field, aiming to provide some insights for decision makers and researchers. [Coverage] This survey contains numerous studies including policy literatures of the leading countries, publications in top-tier international journals, and news reports of enterprise leader. [Methods] Combined with the policy literatures, scientific literatures and news items in the photonic chip field, advanced academic and industrial progresses of the photonic chip are summarized based on the meta-analysis method and analytic hierarchy process. [Results] This paper analyzes the R&D policies of the United States, Europe, Japan and China, summarizes the research issues and relevant important progresses, and briefly describes the main development trends at present. [Limitations] The photonic chip field involves numerous research contents, this paper only describes the research focuses and research trends of the photonic chip in information technology landscape at a macroscopic level, related research advances in other subdivisions may not be fully covered in this paper. [Conclusions] The excellent characteristics of the photonic chip makes it one of the potential disruptive technologies in the “post-Moore era” of the global integrated circuit industry. A key industry explosion period of photonic chip is forthcoming in the near future, but we still need to solve many basic research problems and technological challenges to increase industrial competitiveness.
